The Best Places for Expats Living in Europe 2024

Are you considering moving to Europe and becoming immersed in the culture as an expat? Perhaps you are already living there, but would like to learn more about potential other places to live and work? No matter the reason, we have scoured the internet and found some of the best places for expats to live in Europe in 2024. Enjoy!

Berlin, Germany

Germany in general is a quite open-minded country, but Berlin in particular brings a vibrant and diverse cityscape, filled with people of all backgrounds and origins. The old architecture stands in stark contrast to many modern buildings, and you will be able to find a wide range of shops and stores, selling everything from bratwurst and German beer, to exotic foods and spices from the rest of the world.

Compared to many other European cities, the German capital is actually relatively affordable, making it a great choice for expats looking to stretch their budget as much as possible. There is also a strong job market in the city, allowing you to land a job with relative ease, if you are looking to work while enjoying Berlin.

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon is a popular destination for the older generations of expats living in Europe. This is because the city is quite affordable, offers plenty of quality restaurants, and has a relaxing atmosphere, not to mention plenty of sun.

This has led to many expats choosing Lisbon, and making the city quite ideal for new expats, as it will be easy to blend in with the citizens, and also get help and make new friends while you learn the language and culture around you.

Barcelona, Spain

For expats wishing to experience everything that Europe has to offer, Barcelona might be one of the best options out there. This city is rich with history, architecture and art, while also being dynamic and youthful in the best way possible.

The mediterranean climate and beautiful beaches allows for many months of pure joy, and the winters are quite mild as well, meaning you will be able to enjoy the outdoors as much as your heart desires. But of course, Barcelona has many indoor activities as well, from the world-renowned museums, to a vibrant music scene to boot.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam is another prime location for expats living in Europe, as this is a melting pot of many different cultures and people, and the large city offers plenty of opportunities, no matter what your interests or your budget might be dictating.

The city is known for being extremely easy to traverse, whether you go on foot, choose the barges sailing down the canals, or perhaps try your hand at biking to and from your destination. Amsterdam is also known for scoring high on the quality of life assessments, as the people here are in great health – possibly due to the many people choosing the bicycle each day.

Vienna, Austria

Vienna was once the central point in all of Europe, and when visiting the city you can still see many influences of great archithects, rich families and diverse cultural offerings on display. Citizens of Vienna are known for enjoying a high quality of life, but the city is also quite costly on a whole.

Expats choosing Vienna will find extremely efficient public services and excellent healthcare systems set up for them, and they will be able to enjoy beautiful architecture, parks, and a strong emphasis on work-life balance.

Vienna at night

Copenhagen, Denmark

The most northern city on our list, Copenhagen is a relatively small capital compared to the other ones on our list, but can still be an exciting and worthwhile place for any expat living in Europe. Here you will experience many progressive and inclusive social policies, a strong sense of community, and excellent commuting options.

There is also a rich cultural scene and a thriving design and culinary scene to delight your senses, but you should be aware that it is quite cold compared to some of the other places on our list, and the winter in particular can be filled with snow and indoor activities.
