His most iconic role was in the 1982 film An Officer and a Gentleman, directed by Taylor Hackford. Portraying Gunnery Sgt. Emil Foley, he famously challenged Richard Gere’s character with tough love at an officer candidate school, culminating in a memorable martial arts confrontation.
