In a recent action to address the rise in aggressive dog attacks around the country—especially among the elderly and children (in a few cases leading to death)—the Centre on Wednesday imposed a ban on the sale, import, and breeding of 23 ‘ferocious’ dog breeds, considering them to be a ‘threat to human life.’

The breeds include Mastiffs, Russian Shephers, Wolf dogs, Terriers, pit bulls, and Rottweilers, which are considered dangerous to human life. The ban also covers crossbreeds and mixes of these ferocious breeds.

The move followed a report by a joint panel of animal welfare bodies and experts in response to an order of the Delhi High Court. After consulting all stakeholders within three months, the court directed the union government to decide.

The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying also sent a letter to the chief secretaries of the Union territories and states to ensure the imposition of the ban.

As per the letter, the expert committee formed under the chairmanship of the commissioner of Animal Husbandry recommends prohibiting the import of such dog breeds.
