Milwaukee Brewers: Brice Turang Joins Short List Of Second Basemen In The Franchise With 3 Stolen Base Performance

The Milwaukee Brewers 2024 Opening Day roster is loaded with young, talented, and fast players.  Brice Turang, who was a rookie in 2023, is one of those but he is entering his sophomore season.  During Opening Weekend against the New York Mets he joined a short list of second baseman in the franchise with three stolen bases in a single game.

Brice Turang became the fourth second basemen in Milwaukee Brewers franchise history to have three stolen bases in a game.

According to Mike Vassallo the Brewers now have four second basemen who have had performances consisting of three steals in a single game.  The last player to accomplish this was Eric Young in 2002.  Before that Jim Gantner did it in 1990 and Pedro Garcia in 1975.

Against the Mets Brice Turang stole one base off their starting pitcher and two off of reliever Edwin Diaz.

During Saturday’s game Brice Turang was one of six Brewers who had multiple hits in the game.  He also accounted for three out of their four stolen bases with Sal Frelick also swiping a base.  As for Turang he stole one base off Luis Severino and then stole both second and third base off Edwin Diaz.  Diaz was making his return to a big league mound after missing all of 2023 due to an injury sustained in the World Baseball Classic.

The Milwaukee Brewers are going to steal a lot of bases in 2024.

Stolen bases are making a comeback in Major League Baseball.  New pick off attempt rules and larger bases play a big role in this.  In the Brewers case they also have the players necessary to be one of the best in this category and it may be part of their identity going forward.  We saw flashes of this last year as their 129 steals ranked 11th best in the league, but they could easily push to be within the top five this year.
