The Darwin-hosted Study NT Careers and Jobs Expo recently brought together over 200 international students and approximately 20 local employers from diverse sectors such as tourism, hospitality, accounting, engineering, IT, medicine, public service, community service, and education. This initiative by the Territory Labor Government’s Study NT aimed to provide a platform for students in the Northern Territory (NT) to network with potential employers and discover job and internship opportunities to kickstart their careers in the region.

Minister for Skills, Training & International Education, Joel Bowden, highlighted the NT’s welcoming community and plethora of employment opportunities for international students. He emphasized the importance of such expos in helping students network and find rewarding careers in the NT. Bowden also pointed out the valuable contribution of international students to the society, enhancing cultural, social, and economic ties.

The expo wasn’t just about meeting employers; it also offered free workshops to help students hone their skills for the job market. These workshops covered vital areas such as resume writing, interview skills, and optimizing LinkedIn profiles, complete with a complimentary professional headshot.

The presence of more than 5,600 international students in the NT is a testament to the region’s appeal as an educational destination. With an ambitious goal to increase this number to 10,000 by 2030, events like the Study NT Careers and Jobs Expo play a crucial role in attracting and retaining international talent.

The expo received support from the Australian Government, with a $6,000 Austrade grant awarded to Study NT. This funding underscores the importance of such initiatives in fostering the growth of international education in the region.

Attendees like international student Sandhya Sigel found the expo invaluable in understanding the practical application of their studies and the additional requirements for working in specific industries. Employers like Somerville and Hospitality NT reiterated the importance of international students to their workforce, offering training and support to help them integrate and succeed in their roles.
